National eDNA Testing Program

1Australian Government Department Of Agriculture, Water & The Environment, Canberra, Australia

For the last decade the Department of Agriculture, Water & the Environment has been researching innovative molecular environmental DNA (eDNA) and point-of-care molecular testing technologies with the aim of operationalising scientifically robust, efficient technologies for environmental and biosecurity risk management and other compliance and control purposes.

To achieve national eDNA testing capability at the highest level of competency and accountability as an authorised Competent Authority, we are required to exercise due diligence and ensure an appropriate and responsive enabling environment and governance system is in place.

The department is progressing nine (9) key cross-sectoral projects through the Biosecurity Strategy and Reform Division, to achieve our goal of national eDNA testing competency and capacity. The nine capability-building projects include, development of national eDNA test validation and protocol standards, establishment of a National eDNA Reference Centre and eDNA Collaboration Centre Network, a National eDNA Proficiency Testing Program, a new eDNA Laboratory Accreditation Schedule under the DAWE-NATA Memorandum of Understanding, and eDNA research planning and implementation guidelines.

The National eDNA Testing Program will deliver the underpinning infrastructure, governance and policy framework, and implement eDNA testing at border and post-border locations across Australia and at critical pre-border control points offshore. The nine projects currently funded by the Commonwealth are at various stages of progression. Establishment of the National eDNA Testing program is on-track for completion in the 2022-23 financial year.
